The idea of writing about a war topic stemmed from all of our similar ideas combining into one. We chose to discuss wars that either directly affected a member in the group or struck the members’ intrigue. War has many broad topics that can be discussed: death, destruction, sovereignty, freedom, power, and money. We hoped to show that war has greater consequences than solutions, and that war has devastating effects on people, family from generation to generation, culture, and the environment.
To emphasize the effects of war on people, we each profiled someone that has been involved within a war. Jessie Cyrus chose his grandma, Feather Chicharello, because she had to face the consequences of the Seminole war that happened a century ago. Ashleigh Ripley chose to profile a man named Bradley Manning because he is a whistleblower that leaked top secret information about current wars on the internet. Noor Al Dulaimi chose to write about her father because she noticed over the years how the war on Iraq affected him heavily. Simon Richards chose to profile the “Good Samaritan” of the Rwandan genocide of 1994 because he is acknowledged by many for his actions. Luydmyla Polishchuk chose to write about Ivan Mazepa, a Ukrainian hero/legend lost to history; she wanted to show how war can influence history, and portray heroes like Ivan Mazepa as traitors. (Profiles)
Another way we emphasized the effects of war on people is writing another genre paper. Ashleigh Ripley chose to write her next paper on a movie that portrayed the historical Second World War in a different perspective. Jessie Cyrus wrote a memoir “War Can’t Take It All” that exemplified how the war influenced his childhood and how he would be raised. Noor Al Dulaimi chose to write a commentary about the never ending conflict between Palestine and Israel because she wanted to show the truth about the Palestinians wanting peace, and the Israelis refusal to compromise. Ludymyla Polishchuck chose to write a commentary comparing how the movies in the past teach lessons to their audience, while the movies now are only for crass entertainment. (Another Perspective)
One way to further exemplify the pieces that we wrote was to turn one of our pieces into a translation. Ashleigh Ripley chose to translate her movie review into a Prezi because she wanted to make her audience realize how influential this movie can be if watched. Jessie Cyrus felt that translating his report would hit it home with the audience because it is a visual for them. Simon Richards converted his portion of the group report on the Rwandan Genocide into a Prezi. (Multimedia)
We all had different writing styles and each one of us had his/her own opinion on how the format of the report should be done. So we each had to give up something to compromise on a report with one voice. Revising was done by each member of the group, and that helped because we used our strengths in writing to make the entire report better. Writing different genres is difficult because we had to interchange our mode of writing. An advice for other groups to complete this project is to take the personality test first to understand each personality type in your group. Then use the strengths that each member in the group has to make the group projects the best.
Our online magazine is persuasive because it exemplified how war affects people in different ways. It is well designed because it is very easy to follow while maintaining simplicity. We believe that the magazine lacks visuals that promote our theme. If we had more time, then we would have embellished these.
